Behaviour of a starch as a viscosity modifier for aerial lime-based mortars

چکیده
Different dosages of a commercialized potato starch were added to aerial lime-based mortars in order to check its efficiency as a rheological modifier. Several fresh state properties of the mortars were studied: consistency, density, air content, water retention capacity, setting time and evolution when applied on support. The effect of the starch on -potential of the lime particle surface as well as the particle size distribution and viscosity changes in lime pastes were also assessed in order to elucidate the action mechanism of the polymer. The behaviour of the starch was found to be strongly dosage-dependent: it acted as a thickener when the incorporated dosage was up to 0.30% of lime weight; conversely, above that dosage, it behaved as a plasticizer. The thickening effect took place because polymer molecules were adsorbed onto lime particles acting as a flocculant, as confirmed by -potential and particle size distribution results. For large amounts of polymer, steric hindrance and electrostatic repulsive forces appeared, leading to a dispersion mechanism which explained the plasticizing effect as well as the fresh mortar behaviour.

The majority of the building-stock from before 1900 has been erected with natural hydraulic lime-based mortars in massive masonry. Due to the low modulus of elasticity of lime-based mortars there has never been a need for dilation joints in old masonry structures. Changes in shape as a result of expansion and contraction, due to hot/cold cycles, could be “followed” by these masonry structures w...
متن کاملAn assessment of lime mortars for masonry repair
Most historic and traditional mortars were made with lime. Due to their nature and function lime mortars weather and need to be replaced. Ordinary portland cement mortars can often be incompatible with historic masonry causing structural and aesthetic damage. Petrographic analysis of original mortars from Clonmacnoise Monastery and Ardamullivan Castle evidenced that they were fabricated with fe...

The European Lime Association (EuLA) have instigated a project to identify and quantify the benefits associated with the addition of hydrated lime to cement based mortars, and more importantly, filling the gaps that exist in the evidence in respect of the benefits of hydrated lime additions to workability, bond strength development, durability and in addition the modes of failure of mortars whn...
متن کاملInfluence of Mortar Water Content on the Strength of Lime Mortar Masonry
Water content affects mortar properties and the quality of the resultant masonry, however, it is often subjectively determined by the mason by assessing workability. This lack of explicit methodology and data, can lead to lack of mortar consistency and field performance, adversely affecting full uptake of lime mortars into mainstream technology. The aim of this research is to assist develop con...
متن کاملPozzolanic mortars for the conservation of old masonry structures
The design of repair mortars started from the characterization of the original mortar samples preserved in small areas in the floors of the Dungeon Tower, Bač Fortress. Two materials (waste brick and clay material) were investigated in order to select the pozzolanic material which later was a component of the repair mortar. Based on the compatibility test of the examined old mortars and of the ...
